Why Allergy Tests are Necessary

July 28, 2022

With more than 50 million people in the US experiencing various types of allergies each year, knowing what you are exactly allergic to will give you time to plan and what preventions you can make when allergy season comes. From changing your environment, steering away from allergens, to getting specific treatments.

What is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing are exams done by allergists to know what could cause adverse reactions so one can restrict or avoid unnecessary exposure to certain allergens. Symptoms of various allergies can vary from sneezing, runny nose, hives, swelling of the lip, tongue, face or throat, to anaphylaxis or a severe and potentially life-threatening reaction.

A skin or blood test may be required for an allergy test.

Skin tests are used to determine what potential allergens a person may have. From airborne, food, and contact allergens. If a person reacts severely to this, your doctor or allergist may require a blood test.

Why Are Allergy Tests Performed?

Allergies are found to be the sixth leading cause of chronic illnesses in the U.S., and allergic conditions are among the most common health problems faced by children, according to American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunolgy. Deaths from allergic responses to foods, medications, or unidentified allergens are more common in older persons and Black people.

While allergies cannot be cured, a proper way of managing and treating can help relieve symptoms and even avoid anaphylaxis.

What Will My Allergist Do Next?

After identifying the source and diagnosing, a patient may be prescribed certain medications such as antihistamines or will be treated if necessary.
